a sense of community [02 May 2008|09:40pm]

Dooce's post today is a great read. OK, Dooce's posts are a great read just about every day, but this one made me smile, brought tears to my eyes (those sappy mom genes again!), and made me proud. Proud of her for what she does. Proud of all of us for sharing the things we do. Proud to be part of this wonderful internet mom community.

If you don't know who Dooce is, well, you should so be reading her. I was introduced to her site fairly recently, and I've been working my way through her archives in my 'free time'. She's a witty, irreverent recovering Mormon raising her family in Salt Lake City. She's a great writer and she and her husband take wonderful photographs. And I have to stop reading her site at work because she makes me laugh out loud on a regular basis, and I can't really explain that to my co-workers without admitting that I'm not actually WORKING.

Today's post, one of her monthly letters to her daughter, Leta (now fifty-one months old), addresses the criticism she sometimes receives for airing her child's life on the internet. And I think she's spot-on with everything she has to say about it.

"Leta, some people will one day try to convince you that what I've done here is some sort of sickening betrayal of your childhood, and what those people fail to recognize is that I am doing the exact opposite. This is the glorification of your childhood, and even more than that this is a community of women coming together to make each other feel less alone. You are a part of this movement, you and all of the other kids whose mothers are sitting at home right now writing tirelessly about their experiences as mothers, the love and frustration and madness of it all. And I think one day you will look at all of this and pump your fist in the air."

Taddy [20 Apr 2008|02:39pm]

Looking for some fun new tunes for your kids?

"Taddy" is a song by The Jimmies; this is their newest music video.

The Jimmies are an up-and-coming band with a lot of great children's tunes. As a parent, I really appreciate the variety of music; the songs are fun and catchy, and they include a lot of different musical genres. The whole family will enjoy it!

Ashley of The Jimmies also happens to be my father-in-law's neighbor's daughter; I haven't met her, but it was through my FIL that we were exposed to the band. Unlike a lot of those 'friend of a friend of a family member of a friend' introductions, this is one that I actually recommend! ;)

You can check out their website (and get a sampling of their other songs, as each page plays a different one) here: http://www.gimmejimmies.com/
Be sure to check out the 'Funny Faces' section; my son Drake is in there, as well as my nephew Zachary and, of course, Granddude! (That's my FIL.)

Crying it out results in vomitting....help [28 Jan 2008|08:45am]

[ mood | worried ]

My 10 month old is suddenly waking in the middle of the night and giving up real trouble going to sleep. If we let her cry (5 minutes) she pukes in her bed. I have read all the books and nothing seems to work for her. I tried sitting her room, soothing her in the crib, laying her back down, etc. I am hysterical and exhausted. She was such a good sleeper, but now that she can stand and move around, she's on the move the second she is awake. We end up picking her up, giving her a bottle, and putting her back to bed, but it takes an hour. Please tell me this is a phase.

WIC Community [26 Jun 2007|10:05am]

wicparents is a new community specifically for posting about WIC (Woman, Infants, & Children nutritional program with higher salary qualifiers than food stamps). We welcome anyone who has ever used WIC, may be interested in applying for WIC, and WIC employees. This is a place to talk about WIC experiences both positive and negative, exchange useful information with other WIC members, recipe ideas that call for two gallons of milk, a pound of cheese, two dozen eggs, and two 46 oz cans of juice, and more. We understand that WIC is very state specific and will try to tag entries appropriately.  So come join wicparents!

Parenting Education Group at GSU on Thursdays - Please join!! [24 Jun 2007|02:23pm]

Hi! I'm finishing one of my last practicums for my counseling program at GSU. I need moms of children 6 and under to attend on Thursdays from 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM. If you're in the area, it will be fun, we'll feed you well, and we could really use the attendees. There should also be childcare available. Please email me at angellam@aol.com if you can make it or know someone who can.

Update On - Vote For My Mess! [25 Apr 2007|02:19pm]

Hi everyone!

So it turns out there's an update to the "Messiest Mess" contest. Over the last two days, several of you have asked if you needed to subscribe to the list email that ORG sends to you after you vote. Several of you have also asked when the contest ends. Alas, I did not know, and the rules on the site were alarmingly vague.

Today, I checked the site and noticed that the number of votes on everyone's pictures has DROPPED drastically, and I'm now in FIRST place (which is fantastic!)...but I have less than a third of the votes I had yesterday. ??

So I called the company to clarify. Turns out they WEREN'T originally making people sign up for the mailing list, and as such people were voting with bogus emails and creating programs to vote repeatedly for them. 'We wanted to do this on the honor system, but it turns out that's not going to be possible,' said the company rep I spoke to. Well, it's a nice idea, but...DUH. :)

So, now - YES, you DO have to sign up for the mailing list to confirm your e-mail address and have your vote count for my mess. You can easily unsubscribe when you get the first e-mail from them.
If you've already cast your vote but did not sign up for the list, please do respond to that validation email you received from ORG so that your vote will count!

I didn't know that they would even be asking people to sign up for a list when I posted my first message to all of you...sorry about that, folks, I would have warned you.

If you're willing to be signed up for their email list, even momentarily, in order to vote for me...I really, REALLY appreciate it. I'm in first place currently and with your help, I'd love to stay that way! Please continue to spread the word, and feel free to send my update email here along to anyone you may have shared my original request with.

I appreciate all of your help! Party at my house if I win! You're all invited! :)

Let's keep me in first place! Go to http://www.messiestmess.com and vote for mess 908!! :)

P.S. - contest ends in the beginning of June. We have a LOT of voting to do! Pass it on! :)

Thanks! - Kristi

please vote for me, I need your help! [23 Apr 2007|04:07pm]

Hello everyone!

I'm writing to ask all of you a HUGE favor. We all know I'm not the most organized person in the world, and I must admit that my utility room (AKA laundry, storage, and office room) needs a LOT of help. So I entered a room makeover contest (some of you on my friends list may remember when I was originally posting pictures of it!). And I didn't win the grand prize, but they are running a second contest wherein the public can vote on the "Messiest Mess" - the Mess with the most votes wins the makeover.

This is what I'm asking of all of you...anything you can do to help is MUCH appreciated!

1) Will you please go vote for my mess? Go to http://www.messiestmess.com - my Mess is number 908 - find my mess and vote for me please!

2) Would you please forward this on (via e-mail, or post it to your friends list, or both) to anyone you're comfortable asking a favor, and please ask them to vote for my mess?

Thank you SO much, I really appreciate it!!!

Do you have children or access to them? [29 Mar 2007|08:28pm]

[ mood | busy ]

I, Yavanna June Martin/Klappal, am doing a “stages of art portfolio” for my early childhood education class. So if you have a child that is 2-8 years old, I would appreciate if I could have an original piece of art from them, in crayon, water color, or collage. The art work needs to have their name, age, and any physical or mental disabilities that they might have listed on the back left corner of their art project. I would need to have their art by Thursday April, 5th 2007. Thank you in advance for your help.

Taking Kids To Movies - First Time [29 Mar 2007|09:46am]

What's the best age for your child to go to the movies for the first time?

I was thinking about giving it a try with my son, but I'm not sure if he's still too young. He enjoys watching movies and he is very advanced for his age - he communicates extremely well and understands a LOT. But for all that, he is still two (he'll be three at the end of July).

The movie I have in mind is 'Meet The Robinsons', because Mommy wants to see it too, lol. I'd like to go whether or not I take my son, actually (LOL) but I was thinking he might enjoy the outing.

So...what are your thoughts? If you've done this before, how old were your kids when you first went? How did they handle it? What movie did you see?

Picture Post - updatey thing [28 Mar 2007|05:15am]

[ mood | accomplished ]

Well, it's getting a lot warmer outside...unfourtunately, today is one of those typical Illinois spring days - thunderstorms and wind galore. Can't complain too much because it *is* getting warmer. This means Taylor will start soccer soon.

Updates...Thomas is now 2. He now has about 150 words in his vocabulary, actually uses about 2. He's still going to speech therapy, and he really has improved tons, from being an 18 month old who refused to speak to being a 2 year old with lots of words who still sometimes refuses to speak. I think the main issue is actually having a conversation with him, not whether or not he understands and can reciprocate. He is so intelligent...just stubborn. :)

Taylor will be 5 on April 15, and she walks around telling everybody so. She says "My birthday is April 15, are you coming to my birthday party? We're going to Chuck E. Cheese." Thankfully, she only does this in front of the people we have invited, or family members who know she's excited about her birthday...otherwise, it might be a bit awkward. She starts Kindergarten this year too...I don't know where my baby went.

Anyway...on to the pictures!

come out with us! [15 Dec 2006|02:46pm]

Anyone in the general Chicago area that might be interested in meeting other parents, we're arranging a parents get-together over in the chitown_mamas community! Here's a link to the planning poll:

Please feel free to come over and share your opinions! We'll be doing this on a quarterly basis, moving around to various places (including suburbs I'm sure), and would love to meet more local parents.

south suburb winter activities [28 Nov 2006|01:52pm]

Great idea! I like sharing our local winter activities, maybe we'll help each other out and/or maybe some of us will be able to get together :)

I'm in the south suburbs...Lansing, to be exact...and this is what's going on in my town/area that I've found so far:

First, I got a flyer from Applebee's in the mail the other day noting that they were doing a breakfast with Santa on December 9th. I don't know if this is just in my area or if it is all Applebee's restaurants; it didn't reference a specific Applebee's so I think it may be nationwide. I believe it's a charity drive for Toys For Tots, IIRC, and I think breakfast tickets were $8 a person. I'd call your local Applebee's and ask about it if you're interested. We're considering going.

Second, of activities past...we had a local tree lighting last Friday (which we didn't get to), and last Saturday morning Santa and Mrs. Claus flew into town (by helicopter), landed on the football field at the local high school, greeted kids (a couple pictures of my son shaking hands with Santa here), and then headed over to their local 'house' where they will entertain children this month.

this is the other stuff going on in my townCollapse )

Also, I'm having a holiday potluck at my house this Saturday evening. If you might be interested in trekking to Lansing to hang out with people you've never met, let me know ;)
